Femtosecond Lasers For Micromachining Applications

Laserod

Short pulsed Femtosecond laser solutions are continuously growing and developing across a range of market areas, including micromachining, bio, medical, and research & development. Ultrafast lasers are mainly used in applications where a conventional CW, long-pulsed fiber, nanosecond and picosecond laser systems do not achieve the necessary HAZ and efficiency.

A femtosecond laser represents 10 to the −15 of a second, which is one-millionth of a billionth of a second. At given pulse energy, the laser’s peak power increases as the length of the pulse becomes shorter. Femtosecond lasers, therefore, have a much higher peak power than longer pulsed picoseconds, millisecond or nanosecond pulsed lasers.

Since more of total energy is transmitted to the substance and less is drawn into heating the material, these higher peak powers result in higher removal rates in a given material. These femtosecond lasers’ high peak power, sometimes several-MW, disrupts the atoms and electrons in the material, resulting in what is known as a “Coulomb explosion.” A Coulomb explosion is an-alternative cold processing to traditional thermal ablation, which is used by longer pulsed lasers.

Ablation is a thermal mechanism that relies on molecules and atoms local heating, melting and vaporizing. For some laser applications, ablation can be harmful as it usually produces unnecessary HAZ, recast, and burs, all of which are negative heat effects that make cold ablation a better option.
